Problems with dual moniters

I am running Ubuntu 18.04.1 with no customizations on an ASUS X541S laptop. I
am trying to set up a second monitor. The external monitor is a wide screen
Acer Technologies 23".

--- Connected with a VGA cable Ubuntu will boot two different ways.

If Ubuntu thinks the external monitor is an old (not wide screen) monitor it
uses the center of the laptop screen with about 1 1/2 inch black space on each
side of the screen. The data on the laptop screen is distorted, a wide screen
squeezed to fit a non-wide screen. The data on the external monitor is full
screen but the data is stretched to fit the wide screen from the distorted
(squeezed) data on the laptop. Looks weird.

If Ubuntu thinks the external monitor is a wide screen monitor it uses the full
wide screen on the laptop. The external monitor is also used as a wide screen
but the data is shifted about 5/8 of an inch to the left so your can not see
all the data on the screen. I could not find a way to shift the data on the
Acer monitor to the right so all the data is visible.

I have no idea why Ubuntu picks wide scree verses non wide screen since both
screens are wide screens.
Using the VGA cable the cursor works without problemsb displaying the data is
the problem.
Anyone know how to get Ubuntu to always start in wide-screen mode and show all
the data?

Both screens display the data as wide screen but there are mouse dropping
everywhere and the cursor does not move smoothly and holding the button down to
drag something it appears as if you are not keeping the button down (bouncing).
Makes it hard to keep track of where the real cursor is located even harder to
drag an object to another location. At first I thought my mouse was failing so
I tried a different mouse so it is not a mouse problem.

It seems that this problem has been around for a long time. My searching did
not come up with a fix.
Using the HDMI cable the data on the screen is normal but the mouse really has
problems.
Anyone know how to fix the mouse problem?
