In an xterm type:

df -h for free space OR
du -h in a directory for disk usage

In a terminal type "df -h" This will output the size, used, available,
and % used for each partition.

If you have the default ubuntu-desktop packages installed, then you
should find the gnome system monitor somewhere in the xfce menu. You can
check your free disk space with the system monitor.

If I remember correctly there is also some "show free space" panel
plugin for xfce.
