Unable to mount a usb "stick" in ubuntu 8.04

Guys etc.

I have a usb multicard reader known to work with Debian and other
Linux machines as well as a 1gb camera card that I've been able to use
before to upload camera pictures (rather than use the camera usb
cable). When I plug the card into the reader, no notification comes up
that it detects a new device (and it used to be able to do this) but
apparently that functionality no longer works. Along the way, I see
that various deamons running the system have stopped or are no longer
working, so I restarted cupsd, syslogd, hal, and a few others.

I've tried various names for the usb "drive", such as sdf, sdg, sdd,
etc., none seem to work, all say there is no such device, or mount
says that the fs is not valid (should be fat32 or msdos, or some
variation on that.

If I 'strings /dev/sdg' I can get to the filesystem which looks like
there are JPG files on it - which is what is expected, but any attempt
to mount the disk fails.

Snippet from log:

So shouldn't sdg1 be the right device? But:

dfox at newbox:/var/log$ sudo mount /dev/sdg1 /media/cdrom0
mount: special device /dev/sdg1 does not exist

udev or whatever doesn't seem to want to create the special device node.

These are hard drives, I can see that:

I don't see any lines come up when I tail the syslog file (or
messages) if I unplug and plug back in the usb stick. So obviously
that part of the system is broken.

Any other ideas?

it should, but just looking at the snippet above makes me think that
either FAT is damaged or your usb "stick" is going bad.

I don't see any lines come up when I tail the syslog file (or
messages) if I unplug and plug back in the usb stick. So obviously
that part of the system is broken.
Any other ideas?
Try another known good USB device and see if it mounts. The data you
sent makes me think your USB device is bad.

Well, I can see the card in the camera, so AFAICT it's good.

And it's only maybe 2 years old so I can't see how it could have
gotten that damaged.

But I tried as you suggested, plugged in a small usb stick I've only
recently used, and presto:

The device node does not get created.

There's no /dev/sdh or even /dev/sdh1 present on my system.

I tried to restart udev, but it hangs the terminal.

Not only that, but amarok can't see my iriver t3 player.

Time to reboot, I guees. Hate to do that, but this has happened before
in Debian lenny - deamons that handle the hotplugging of devices
mysteriously die and nothing usb-related will work without a reboot.

I half expect that brendan guy to chime in and tell me to reinstall :).

I also think that is either a bad filesystem or a bad USB.
Did you try to use fdisk or cfdisk to see if you can see the USB. Try to
reformat the USB. Don't forget to back up your data before doing this.

Cheers

Yes by all means reinstall! :-)

Well a reboot would be a thing to try. If that fails to correct the
problem it looks like something in the depths of the automatic USB
detection software and I do not go there. That and X-windows are too
complex for this old guy.

never restart udev ... it has tools to trigger a scan for new devices:

sudo udevadm trigger

ciao
