printing issues

I have an HP printer which has been working flawlessly on 18.04. I am now
gettng the following error
Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
Qt: Session management error: Could not open network socket

In addition when I search for Printers there is no longer any listing for
it. Two printers show on HP device manager. One shows a communication
error. I can print to the other but it is only printing partial pages.

I reinstalled everything named "Cups" and already installed via Synaptic.

Any suggestions?

thanks

I was using the Unity interface when I wrote the above. In the Ubuntu
interface I do see 'printers' under Device in Settings. However there are
two printers showing there and only one in the HP Device Manager. I
deleted the second, non-working one from Printers under Device but it
returns immediately.

It is printing albeit it is barely putting ink on every other line.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Try removing both, then unplugging the printer before one reappears
and then rebooting?

Tried that. Now there are three listings under "Printers!" The one I
added after deleting the two that were there and two others. Same printer.

How odd.

Your printer has USB *and* wireless conections being used. I find this
unusual but (AFAIK) it is not forbidden. 1. above shows you have not
uncommented any CreateIPPPrinterQueues line, so, by default, a queue for
a local IPP printer (which you do have and which is connected by USB)
will be auto-created using ippusbxd. You can check for auto-creation with

systemctl stop cups-browsed

HP_DeskJet_3630_series_61C73D_ should disappear from 'lpstat -t'.

As before:

lp -d HP_DeskJet_3630_series_61C73D_ /etc/nsswitch.conf

Good. Both these HPLIP queues use the same filters. The margin issue is
minor.

cup.service is an invalid service name. I actually gave cups-browsed as
the service to stop. This was only to demonstate to you that the queue
which keeps coming back is managed by cups-browsed.

Good. This is a driverless queue auto-created by cups-browsed. It has
nothing to do with HPLIP.

You have indeed, and it shows you have a working printing system. You
can, if you wish, do more testing with a more varied selection of files
printed with different applcations.

Here is what I would do on your system for printing:

1. Decide whether to use one or other of the USB or wireless connections.

2. If USB is chosen, delete the two HPLIP queues. You could also purge
HPLIP from the system as it is no longer used.

3. If wireless is chosen, uncomment "CreateIPPPrinterQueues All" in
/etc/cups/cups-browsed.conf" and restart cups-browsed. Delete the two
HPLIP queues. You could also purge HPLIP as it is no longer used.

Keep things simple; you do not need USB and wireless at the same time.
And, by using driverless printing, all HPLIP bugs can be avoided and
nobody need bother about installing non-free plugins for printing ever
again.

I removed the printer I installed wirelessly (I never installed one to
print by USB). I still have a printer I can not remove using
'System/Devices/Printers.' It is
labeled HP_DeskJet_3630_series_61C7. I can not print from it when using
the Ubuntu interface, I can with the Unity interface- I can not delete it
from there either as I gave no print interface, that is, there is no
System/Devices/Printers.
I added the printer using 'System/Devices/Printers.' It works and appears
to be working correctly.

I uncommented "CreateIPPPrinterQueues All. I restarted CUP sudo systemctl
restart cups.service I now have 3 printers listed .

Seems to be printing fine.

Ok, you didn't actively install a USB print queue but you did have a

Ok, you didn't actively install a USB print queue but you did have a
USB connection and, in that situation, Ubuntu will automatically set an
IPP printer up for you. Many users would appreciate that facility. I
hope you have disconnected the printer from the USB port.

I use Debian, but its printing system and that of Ubuntu are identical

think of a reason. Would you describe what you see there *immediately*
after restarting cups-browsed.

I am seriously flummoxed. You have "CreateIPPPrinterQueues All"
uncommented in cups-browsed.conf. If cups-browsed is stopped, this
queue will disappear. It's as simple as that.

You look at 'lpstat -t' before stopping cups-browsed and then look
at it after stopping cups-browsed. There should be a difference.

You haven't said, but the USB cable has also been removed?

Let's call this a draw. It isn't as though you cannot successfully
print.

The only time I have had a cable connected was to install using HPLIP.

Looks like I will need HPLIP to scan.

I am seriously flummoxed. You have "CreateIPPPrinterQueues All"
uncommented in cups-browsed.conf. If cups-browsed is stopped, this
queue will disappear. It's as simple as that.
You look at 'lpstat -t' before stopping cups-browsed and then look
at it after stopping cups-browsed. There should be a difference.
You haven't said, but the USB cable has also been removed?
Let's call this a draw. It isn't as though you cannot successfully
print.

Finally found webscan on an hp site. It's not giving me a print code for
some reason. Bit complicated.

Got webscan working. Lost a bit of hair as the print code was not
printing. Had to remove and reinstall webscan to get a code.

We appear to be at cross-purposes. You would do well to read the
manual for the 3630 and search for "Webscan".

The IP address for the device (from the avahi-browse outputs) is
192.168.1.129. Put this into the address bar of your browser. The
page you get should have something about scanning in one of the
tabs.

You figure it out! Simple scan is now working. It is a bit more than
webscan.

I can scan from webscan as well, as I think I already mentioned,

thanks for all your help!

Looks like I will need HPLIP to scan.
Thanks for your assistance!
You do not need the whole of HPLIP. Even if you do install it, it
will not help - you will end up tying youself in knots with printing
(which is working) and scanning. All you require is libsane-hpaio
installed with the command given earlier.

Having said that, you have, very unfortunately, encountered LP Bug
#1797501:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1797501

This is the reason for the lack of scanner discovery with scanimage.
It is revealed by your useful avahi-browse output for _uscan._tcp. The
error should show up in journalctl. The TXT record for _uscan._tcp has

ty=DeskJet 3630 series

The first three characters are removed to give

kJet 3630 series (Check journalctl for this after doing scanimage -L).

and /usr/share/hplip/data/models/model.dat is searched for this device.
It does not exist, which is why you cannot scan. So - we will make it
exist!

Edit models.dat and add this section:

[kjet_3630_series]
scan-type=7

simple-scan should now work.

The only time I have had a cable connected was to install using HPLIP.
The reason I asked whether the USB cable had been disconnected was
because of
ipp://HP18602461C73D.local:631/ipp/print
The "_" after 73D" in HP_DeskJet_3630_series_61C73D_ is indicative
of a typical queue name that ippusbxd gives a USB queue. It appears
in one of your earlier posts when you did have the USB connection
you speak of.
However, you then switched to a wireless connection by altering
cups-browsed.conf. What I think is happening is that the previous
USB queue is now modified and, in that situation, the queue is
released from the control of cups-browsed. Which is why the queue
did not disappear when cups-browsed was stopped.

It's odd to have a printer that one can not delete. Does not seem to be a
problem as long as you avoid choosing it.

Good. Both these HPLIP queues use the same filters. The margin issue is
minor.

cup.service is an invalid service name. I actually gave cups-browsed as

Good. This is a driverless queue auto-created by cups-browsed. It has
nothing to do with HPLIP.

I think I answered everything you asked.
You have indeed, and it shows you have a working printing system. You
can, if you wish, do more testing with a more varied selection of files
printed with different applcations.
And, by using driverless printing, all HPLIP bugs can be avoided and
nobody need bother about installing non-free plugins for printing ever
again.

Your device has a Webscan feature. See the manual.

If you prefer to use simple-scan, you will have to install a small
portion of the HPLIP software:

I thought you had removed HPLIP and all its related packages, but it
shouldn't matter.

You were given the command 'scanimage -L'. Did you try it?

I have an HP printer which has been working flawlessly on 18.04.  I am
now gettng the following error
Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
Qt: Session management error: Could not open network socket
In addition when I search for Printers there is no longer any listing
for it.  Two printers show on HP device manager.  One shows a
communication error.  I can print to the other but it is only printing
partial pages.
I reinstalled everything named "Cups" and already installed via Synaptic.
Any suggestions?
For HP printers I have always got them working this way:

1. go to https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing
2. download HPLIP for your distribution
3. execute the .run file
4. give your password when asked
5. answer the questions and perform the actions (read carefully)
6. create the NAME of your printer meaningfully (one word, plain ASCII)

When it's done (about 15 mins) go to http://localhost:631 and check that
CUPS can see your printer under the name you gave it under Printers,
then click on the name and select Test Page from the Maintenance menu.
Use the Administration menu to [re]set the defaults (eg paper size).

I can't see where you mentioned what HP printer you have. I've always
had problems using the HPLIP software and found out years ago that it
was much easier to install foo2zjs from here -
http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ My HP1020 Laser works just fine with it.
